Meet Katy

Lead by Example

Katharine (Katy) Lum is Of Counsel to CRCBL, where she brings sharp analytical skills and a comprehensive understanding of Colorado domestic laws and courts to her family law practice.

Katy is CRCBL’s appellate specialist.  Her appellate experience encompasses all aspects of family law, including the appeals of orders regarding marital agreements, parenting time, decision-making, property valuation and division, spousal maintenance, child support, and statutory interpretation.  Katy is adept at breaking down and simplifying complex legal arguments, and she has achieved positive outcomes for her appellate clients.  Katy is frequently asked to speak on family law appellate issues at continuing legal education programs.  She is also a member of the Amicus Committee of the Family Law Section, which prepares briefs when an appellate court seeks input from the Section.

Here for you.

Katy’s skills as an appellate advocate are underpinned by her extensive experience as a trial litigator. Katy’s expansive financial expertise encompasses the unique challenges faced by parties of limited means as well as families with multi-million-dollar estates and complex financial assets.  She is also experienced in litigating complex parental responsibilities issues, including those involving substance abuse, domestic violence, and children with medical disabilities.

In addition to her appellate practice, Katy serves as an arbitrator in family law matters.  Katy uses her expertise in analyzing trial court orders from an appellate perspective, combined with her wide-ranging prior experience litigating and settling family law cases, to produce informed, thoughtful, and fair decisions. As an arbitrator, Katy balances the need for each case to proceed in an efficient and cost-effective manner while allowing each party to feel heard on the issues that are of utmost importance to themselves and their families.

Katy has been recognized by her peers for her knowledge of Colorado domestic relations law and her reputation for accomplished and professional representation.  Katy was named one of the Best Lawyers in America for 2020, 2021, and 2022.  She has been asked to speak at numerous continuing education seminars and has been published in The Colorado Lawyer.  In January, 2020, Katy was invited to serve on the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Family Issues.

In addition to her work with the firm, Katy is an active volunteer with Metro Volunteer Lawyers and was recognized as the volunteer of the year in January 2020 for her work in their post-decree program. Katy is also highly involved in bar association activities, serving on the Executive Council of the DBA Young Lawyers’ Division and on the Executive Council of the Family Law Section, under which she is the co-chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Committee. Katy is committed to improving both the practice of law for her fellow attorneys and access to justice for litigants.

Katy attended the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where she was a recipient of the Dean’s Fellowship, a merit-based award. As a student initially focused on environmental law, she won the American Jurisprudence Award for her academic performance in Environmental Law and was a member of the board of Ecology Law Quarterly. Katy was also an active participant in Community Legal Outreach, a student group providing free legal services and referrals to vulnerable members of the San Francisco Bay Area community.

When Katy isn’t working, she can be found hiking in the mountains, hanging off the side of a rock face, playing the cello, or baking treats which our doctors wish she would stop bringing to the office.
